Case #07: The Script Follower
When the life you’ve built checks every box, except the ones that matter to you.
They did everything “right.” Went to the good school. Landed the solid job. Built the respectable life.
From the outside, it looks great. From the inside, it feels... hollow.
This is what I call The Script Follower. Not because they’re unoriginal, but because they were never given permission to write their own.
Somewhere along the way, they inherited a blueprint:
Success means stability
Security means staying on the path
Achievement equals worth
So they followed it. They worked hard, checked the boxes, kept going. And they got rewarded for it—money, status, titles.
But now? Something’s missing.
They wake up with a quiet dread they can’t explain. They daydream about quitting without a plan. They wonder, in moments they don’t admit out loud:
“Is this really it?”
They tell themselves: “I should be grateful.” “This is what I worked for.” “People would kill for this life.”
But that inner ache won’t go away. Because deep down, they know… This life was built on someone else’s dream.
Their quiet rebellion begins when they stop reciting the script. And start asking what story they actually want to live.
Pause here for a moment
Whose version of success are you living?
What would it look like to choose your own definition now?
If this sounds like you
You’re not lost. You’re just waking up.
If this resonates (or you lead someone who fits this pattern) here’s what helps:
Notice the "shoulds" that shape your day
Journal on: What did I actually want before the world told me what to want?
Let yourself explore alternatives without needing to act yet
Surround yourself with people who’ve made unconventional choices and survived
This isn’t about burning your life down.
It’s about reclaiming authorship.
You’re not ungrateful for questioning the script. You’re just ready to write your own.
